glenn ligon

Glenn Ligon, a man who gave up his typical life of the 5-9 to dedicate his life to art. He explores several things in his art. He mainly focuses on race, language, desire, sexuality, and identity. He does this through words. He can do colored words, or black and white colors. I find this super cool. He started making art of preexisting characters. He had his own little side gig through high school. I think this is super important in any artist life. The idea that you must practice repeatedly to get good at creating art. Even the people who are known as the greats, while some of their work might seem super simple to create, when you get down to it, you see that these people got the way they were through trial and error, seeing Glenn Ligon do this reassures why he is such an outstanding artist. project 2

I did this project towards the start of the semester, and I can still remember how these images made me feel. At the time I really didn't enjoy doing the physical drawings of the images, I felt that I couldn't do them justice, but after going in and doing a digital painting of them, I felt that I was able to put more life into what I was drawing. The brushes that I was using started to add randomness to the drawings and that made me feel like there was more character to them.

project 1

I would have to say that this was my second favorite project that I did. It was interesting taking the black and white photos and adding to them, because even though I wasn't adding much when it comes to color. It made the images stand out so much more and because of that it felt like normal colored images. The textures and everything where already there in the black and white photos, I simply added the color. Something I contemplated while I was doing this was to add a crazy spin to the photos, for example, I could have made Maryland Monroe hair green, or something other than her natural color. Overall I really enjoyed the process on this one.
